A Little Bit About Us.

The Kilkivan Community Gardens & Railway Markets Project began in 2001 when a group of like-minded residents decided to clean up and restore the local historic railway station and its surrounds. The railway station, built in 1886, was at the end of the first ever branch line constructed in Queensland. A garden was established - with native plants and trees - soon after. The restoration of the station's goods shed was next and it is beside this building that the Sunday morning markets are held. The work was - and still is - done by volunteers.

In 2004 the Committee, which oversees the project, decided to start a Sunday morning market as a way of helping to raise the funds needed to finance the restoration and beautification of the station. At present, the markets are run on a weekly basis and all individuals or groups, who wish to maintain a stall, are more than welcome.

In 2006 the project undertook a program to help local "work-for-the-dole" people who couldn't travel the long distances required and it is with their help and hard work the project is able to manage much of the work that is required.

The Committee and members of the Project wish to extend a resounding thank you to all our supporters, near and far, for their constant support during the battle to keep the Theebine to Kingaroy branch line open. During this campaign 19,500 signatures were collected and the resulting petition was presented to Premier Anna Bligh. Sadly, due to Government policy that fight has now been lost and the line has been officially closed.

We still intend to continue the maintenance of the railway precinct and the gardens for as long as we can. And, of course, the Sunday morning markets will continue to be held each Sunday.
